PRESS RELEASE – The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League announced that the Cooperstown Hawkeyes will not field a team in 2014.
“The Hawkeyes have elected to place their franchise in Voluntary Suspension. Negotiations with Cooperstown officials regarding the use of Doubleday Field had reached an impasse.” commented PGCBL President Jeff Kunion. “Though it was a unique experience to play at the birthplace of baseball, the venue didn’t work well for collegiate summer baseball.”
Tom Hickey, owner of the Cooperstown Hawkeyes, while sad to sit out next season was very upbeat about the future of PGCBL baseball in Cooperstown. “We plan on developing a new facility in the area and we will take the time to get it done right. Our new ballpark will be state of the art and will attract quality players from all over the country. The Hawkeyes will be back”
Entering it’s fourth season, the PGCBL is affiliated with Perfect Game, the largest independent scouting service in the country. In 2013, more than 1,300 professional players had either worn the uniform of a PGCBL team or participated in a Perfect Game USA event.
