Kernels Break Single-Game Attendance Record

Cedar Rapids Kernels LogoPRESS RELEASE – In front of an all-time crowd of 5,879, the Kernels finished off a sweep of the Beloit Snappers with a 6-5 win. The previous attendance record was 5,861 on July 12, 2002.

Beloit got on the scoreboard first in the 3rd. Dayton Alexander scored on a RBI single by Daniel Robertson.

Max Kepler put the Kernels in front with a 2-run home run in the 4th. The long ball also scored Niko Goodrum, who reached on a fielder’s choice one batter earlier.

The Snappers tied the game at 2 via a RBI groundout off the bat of Robertson.

The Kernels pushed across three runs to take a 5-2 lead in the 6th. There was one hit in the frame and no RBI was recorded. The Snappers committed two errors. Mike Gonzales, Travis Harrison, and Joel Licon scored.

Christopher Bostick narrowed the opponent’s deficit with a 2-out RBI single in the 7th, making the score 5-3. But the Kernels responded again in the bottom half as Kepler poked an RBI triple off the right center field wall to score Tyler Grimes, giving the Kernels a 6-3 advantage.

John Wooten then led off the 8th with a solo homer to left center to pull the Snappers back, 6-4. Wooten struck again in the 9th with a RBI double, cutting the Kernels lead to 6-5.

Brett Lee went 4.2 innings in the start for the Kernels. Lee allowed two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four. Dallas Gallant (1-0) was the first out of the bullpen, and he didn’t allow a run in 1.1 innings as he picked up the win. The right-hander struck out three. Alex Muren followed and allowed two runs on four hits while walking a pair. Madison Boer went 1.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out one as he picked up his 5th save.

Beloit starter Dakota Bacus (9-5) left after 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits while walking three and striking out four in the loss.
