PA Announcer Threatens to Quit Over Name Change, R-Phils Announce Tryouts for New Voice

As some already know, Dave “Frenchy” Bauman, the PA announcer for the Double-A Reading Phillies (Eastern League) for the past 35 years, has been very critical on Facebook of the team’s impending name change that is scheduled to be announced on Nov. 17.  Bauman says he won’t return if the new branding is a “silly contrived nickname, (with) an insulting cartoon-ish logo.” While GM Scott Hunsicker has made it very clear he is not firing Bauman, he’s opened up the PA job for tryouts, just in case Bauman departs.  Read more here.

  2. This smacks more and more like the name will not change, and that the team found another way to keep them in the headlines during the off-season.

      I hope you’re right but what a lousy way to get publicity, enraging the fanbase. They didn’t need it anyway; they do a great job attendance-wise. But I hope you’re right.

      Remember when there was all this hype about the Atlantic City Surf and everyone got excited but then it turned out to be a ruse? Maybe it’s one of those scenarios.
