We can’t believe it has been nine years since we visited Veterans Memorial Stadium (II), the then-new home for the Single-A Cedar Rapids Kernels (Midwest League). More than 10 years after the facility was built (and the old park was sadly demolished), the Kernels have unveiled a proposal to create a $3-million capital improvement fund over the next decade for stadium care, repairs and upgrades, including a new scoreboard.
Under the proposal, the Kernels would pony up $500,ooo, the Veterans Memorial Commission would donate $1 million, and the City of Cedar Rapids would contribute $1.5 million. A public hearing before the city council to discuss the proposed agreement has been scheduled for Aug. 28. Read more here.
