PRESS RELEASE – Utica Brewers are proud to announce that Giorgio Varlaro has accepted the role as Director of Media Relations for the club. He is responsible for all media relations, website, social content, and the Pointstreak system (live game stats/audio stream).
Along with being the Director of Media Relations for the Brewers, Giorgio was appointed as the Athletic Website Manager of Herkimer College in August of 2013. It …is his responsibility to provide information and create awareness of the colleges 19 NJCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic programs to local, regional and national outlets. Through the Generals’ athletic website not only can game stories, press releases and social media be found but a true sense of possibility for all who attend. Herkimer College provides student-athletes opportunities on the field and in the classroom, giving them a foundation to progress and become successful.
Allowing Varlaro to obtain a position with the college was previous sports experience in marketing, public relations, event management, promotions and journalism. Each different in their own right, gave him skills and an understanding of multiple successful business practices as it relates to athletics.
In 2007 he interned in sports information at St. John Fisher College, helping their athletic department with its 21 NCAA Division III athletic programs. Two years later, Giorgio came back to his hometown, accepting a sports editor position with GateHouse Media, Inc., writing for the Herkimer Evening Telegram where his reach included 39 school districts.
In the fall of 2010, Varlaro was accepted to graduate school at Ithaca College where he also worked in event management with Cornell University. There he adhered to and enforced all policies and procedures for 32 Division I varsity programs who belonged to the NCAA, Ivy League and ECAC. To finish his degree Giorgio traveled to Philadelphia, PA to expand on his event experience, accepting an internship with the Wells Fargo Center which is the home of the Philadelphia 76ers, Flyers, Wings and Storm. When the position finished, Monster Energy offered Giorgio a position as a brand ambassador, expanding his knowledge to an extreme sports environment.
In total, Giorgio has seven years of experience in high school, college and professional athletics. It took him the same amount of time to receive an A.A. from Herkimer College (2006) in Liberal Arts & Sciences: General Studies, B.A. from St. John Fisher (2008) in Communications & Journalism and an M.S. from Ithaca College (2011) in Sports Management.
