Atlantic League Seeks More Teams for Southwest Division

PRESS RELEASE – The Atlantic League is pleased and proud to join in the congratulations to the City of Sugar Land, Texas and Opening Day Partners on their historic signing of a Lease and Development Agreement. The signings set in motion the design and construction of a new $33 million, 6,000 seat ballpark in this Houston suburb for a new Atlantic League team that will take the field in 2012.

“We have seen the preliminary ballpark plans and believe that it will be one of the finest minor league ballparks in the country”, said Frank Boulton, Atlantic League CEO. “I add my personal congratulations to Sugar Land, and to ODP principals Peter Kirk, Brooks Robinson and Jon Danos. “We look forward to the first pitch on Opening Day in Sugar Land in April, 2012”, Boulton added.

According to Joe Klein, Atlantic League Executive Director and former Major League General Manager, the League expects to officially approve the agreements and the new team at the Fall League Meetings on later this month. “I have fond memories and many close friends in Texas from my years with the Rangers”, said Klein. “The Houston area is a great baseball market and strong family oriented community, and will be a great match for Atlantic League minor league baseball.”

Sugar Land is planned to be the first city in a new four team Southwest Division of the Atlantic League. Other communities in the region that wish to be considered for admission into this Atlantic League Southwest Division are invited to contact Joe Klein for additional information.
