Relocation of ABC HQ Could Free Up Land for New Squirrels Ballpark

The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC) and the Department of General Services (DGS) have announced a preferred relocation site in Mechanicsville (VA).  ABC’s current location is across the street from The Diamond and could be the landing spot for a new baseball stadium for the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Double-A, Eastern League) and VCU.  Read more here.

The Diamond to Offer New Amenity, But Focus Still on New Ballpark

A New Proposal for The Diamond

Richmond Wants The Diamond, Surrounding Property

Richmond Flying SquirrelsThe city of Richmond (VA) is working to acquire The Diamond, home of the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels (Eastern League), and the nine acres where it sits.  The Richmond planning commission on Monday will consider an ordinance to allow the city to acquire the property from the Richmond Metropolitan Authority, which has owned the Diamond for almost 30 years.  Read more and view aerial photo here.

Council Prez Wants Referendum on Ballpark Site

Productive Ballpark Talks in Richmond

Squirrels Extend Lease, The Diamond to Get New Lights

As reported earlier this week, the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels (Eastern League) have been looking for upgrades to The Diamond while continuing to pursue a new ballpark.  The team and the Richmond Metropolitan Authority (RMA) have tentatively agreed to extend the team’s existing lease agreement through 2015, with a two-year option through 2017.  To help seal the deal, the RMA will install new lights at the ballpark at a cost of $300,000.  Read more here.

Greener Pastures Not So Green

A. Barton Hinkle, senior editorial writer and columnist at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, takes a dim and seemingly bitter look at the status of Triple-A ball in Gwinnett County (GA).  As you recall, the Richmond Braves (International League) left Richmond (VA) and The Diamond for brand new $64 million ballpark outside Atlanta (GA).  Things have not turned out as rosy as predicted at Coolray Field.   Read more here.

More Band-Aids for The Diamond

While the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels (Eastern League) continue to slog through efforts to build a new stadium, The Diamond, the team’s current home, needs about $95,000 in field renovations and new lights at a cost of  about $300,000.  The Squirrels, the Richmond Metropolitan Authority, and VCU will share the cost for the field work, which will begin Wednesday.  Lights are another story.  Read more here.

City: Ballpark to be Home for New Veterans Memorial

Thousands of fans make their way out to The Diamond to see the Single-A Lake Elsinore Storm (California League) each season, which is the reason the Lake Elsinore City Council has decided to place the city’s new veterans memorial along the walkway leading to the stadium.  Read more here.
