It’s no secret that the home of the Sioux Falls Canaries (Independent Professional, American Association) could be torn down, as this was recently recommended by a citizen task force. Adding to the intrigue, Sanford Health just released plans that suggest that the team’s new field could be built just a few miles up the road as part of the “the Sanford Mile” — their version of the Magnificent Mile in Chicago. A task force charged with studying future needs at the Sioux Falls (SD) events campus is recommending demolition of facilities, including Sioux Falls Stadium, home of the Sioux Falls Canaries (Independent Professional, American Association). The group says the stadium loses more than $200,000 a year, will soon need around $3 million in repairs and maintenance, and keeping it at the current location is not what’s best for baseball in Sioux Falls or taxpayers. We were in Sioux Falls (SD) on Sunday and thought we would drop in on the American Association’s Sioux Falls Pheaseants (formerly Canaries) on Sunday afternoon. Attendance at Sioux Falls Stadium was indeed weak and below the 1,397 reported. To be fair, there was a threat of severe storms, and it was the fifth inning when we arrived.
