‘Save America’s Pastime Act’ a Serious Blow to Indy Leagues?

President Donald Trump signed a spending bill into law Friday that includes the “Save America’s Pastime Act,” which allows professional baseball team operators to treat players like seasonal employees and not subject to overtime rules if they pay minimum wage.   The latter could be a problem for the independent ranks, as stated below by Mike Shaprio, president and general manager of the San Rafael Pacifics (Independent Professional, Pacific Association):

“Like all indy leagues, it is a serious blow.  We have long considered ourselves to be an apprenticeship for these players, to help them rise in the ranks, and therefore not subject to minimum wage.”

Pacifics to Debut Auto Umpire

North American League’s North Division Survives Season

Despite the rocky start with only four teams — including two squads formed at the last minute to replace the Yuma and Fullerton franchises withdrawn from the circuit — the indy pro North American League’s North Division ended the season Sunday night with the first-year San Rafael Pacifics taking the title from the Na Koa Ikaika Maui in a three-game championship series.  Read more here.

Mid-Season Review for Pacifics Today

Franchise Start Up in a Crunch

It’s been a scramble to take the indy pro North American League’s revamped Northern Division from two teams to four, but it appears to be getting done.  Logos for the new Hawaii Stars and Sonoma County Grapes were introduced earlier this week, the Stars have secured Wong Stadium as the team’s home, and a travel-mitigating schedule is in place.  Now it’s time to focus on putting fans in the seats.  Read more here.

It’s the Hawaii Stars

The indy pro Na Koa Ikaika Maui (North American League) have annouced that the Hawaii Stars will join the Sonoma County Grapes as the second expansion franchise added the to the NAL’s Northern Division to replace the departed Yuma Panthers and Fullerton Flyers.  While it was thought the team would be a traveling club like the Grapes, negotiations are underway to use Wong Stadium in Hilo.  Read more here.

San Rafael, Maui Add Traveling Squads

Pacifics Unveil Mascot, Pick Up NAL Pieces

The new indy pro North American League franchise in San Rafael (CA) will be known as the “San Rafael Pacifics.”  The name was chosen from a list of five finalists that included the Cruisers, Redwoods, Spacemen, and Golden Gaters.  Read more here.
