Bird Island: Raw, Hometown Baseball at Its Finest

Bird Island BullfrogsWe are going to post this story about a little ballpark in Bird Island (MN) (pop. 1,027) because it’s in our own backyard (about 35 miles away down U.S. 212).  It’s the epitome of hometown baseball.  Lions Memorial Park is home of the Bird Island Bullfrogs town team and will be hosting the Division II American Legion State Tournament and co-hosted the State Amateur (adult town team) State Tournament in 2010.  Read more here.

Small Minnesota Town Unveils Plans for Ballpark/Tornado Shelter

Waiting for Study in Blaine, Northwoods League Still on Deck

As we have previously posted, the National Sports Center in Blaine (MN) is studying building 24 baseball and softball fields on the mega sports campus, which could include a new stadium for a summer collegiate Northwoods League franchise.  The study being done by Ripken Design and consultant Conventions, Sports & Leisure International should be completed in the next 45-60 days.  Read more here.

St. Paul Mayor Wastes No Time Gunning for Ballpark Funds

No surprise here, but St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman has sent a letter to the commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and the governor seeking $27 million for a new $54-million stadium for the indy pro St. Paul Saints (American Association) from a recently-created $47.5 economic development fund administered by DEED.  Read more here.

Historic WPA Ballpark in Rural Minnesota to be Demolished

In sad news, the wooden grandstand at historic Al Krueger Field, a WPA ballpark built in rural Perham (MN) in the 1930s, is scheduled to be demolished as early as the end of February.  The supports for the bleachers and the roof have been declared unsafe.  Krueger Field is the home of the Perham Pirates town team. Twins Gunning for 2014 All-Star Game

The Minnesota Twins plan to submit a bid for the 2014 All-Star Game by the end of the year.  The team also plans to spend $1.3 million in the off-season to spruce up barely-broken-in Target Field with “more photos and displays, new carpet and flooring, an improved wi-fi network and a revamped ballpark menu.”  Read more here.

Saints Barnstorm Cold Spring (MN) (w/PHOTOS)

We dropped by historic Cold Spring Baseball Park in Cold Spring (MN) on Saturday to watch the indy pro American Association’s St. Paul Saints take on the Central Minnesota Amateur All-Stars in an exhibition game.  The event, which was presented by Killebrew Root Beer, was part of the Saints’ 2011 pre-season barnstorming tour.
