Growlers Rename Mascot After Barlee/Barley Dispute with Hops

Kalamazoo Growlers HeadBack in December, the Kalamazoo Growlers (Summer Collegiate, Northwoods League) launched a second name-the-mascot contest after the original name Barlee ran into trademark trouble with the Hillsboro Hops (Single-A, Northwest League), who already had a mascot named Barley.  Keeping with the microbrew theme, the portly bear is now named Porter.  View mascot photo here.

Does the ‘Baseball Rule’ Apply to Hot Dogs?

Kansas City Royals LogoThe Missouri Supreme Court is weighing whether the “baseball rule” — a legal standard that protects teams from being sued over fan injuries caused by events on the field, court or rink — should also apply to injuries caused by mascots or the other personnel.  The case stems from a fan who was injured when he was hit in the eye by a foiled-wrapped hot dog thrown by the Kansas City Royals’ mascot.  Read more here.

Busted Bear Leads to Dodgers Mascot Talk

With all the hoopla surrounding the unveiling of the Houston Astros’ new look yesterday, we forgot to mention that the ownership also introduced “Orbit,” the team’s new mascot.  Unfortunately, from our perspective, Houston’s Orbit pales in comparison to Mascot Mania champ “Orbit” from the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes (Pacific Coast League).  You make the call:

Chinooks Mascot Gets Name

Upon announcing the contest in late March, fans of the expansion summer collegiate Lakeshore Chinooks (Northwoods League) submitted over 330 name ideas for the team’s mascot.  The field was then narrowed to three submissions: King, Gill, and Sammy.  After over 800 votes, “Gill” was determined to be the winner by a seven vote margin.  View video announcement here.
