Wilmington (NC) City Manager Sterling Cheatham has indicated that Ripken Design has been chosen out of 10 bidders to represent the city “in developing and analyzing all of the aspects that accompany the development of a minor league baseball facility.” The city council is expected to review the proposal next Tuesday. The Wilmington Ballpark Coaltion, a group of local business leaders supporting the proposed new baseball stadium in Wilmington (NC), was introduced to the community on Monday. It was also announced that representatives from Mandalay and the Atlanta Braves will hold a press conference to discuss the project at 10 a.m. this morning on the lawn of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. One day after the Bricktown ballpark in Oklahmoa City was renamed Newcastle Field at Bricktown as part of a ballpark naming rights deal, outcry by officials that the home of the Triple-A Oklahoma RedHawks (Pacific Coast League) would be associated with a gambling establishment — Newcastle Casino — Mandalay and the Chickasaw Nation changed the name to Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. New Hanover County (NC) has withdrawn from new baseball stadium discussions with the City of Wilmington (NC) and Mandalay Entertainment. Luzerne County has filed a lawsuit against Lackawanna County and the Lackawanna County Multi-Purpose Stadium Authority claiming entitlement to half the “gross proceeds” from any sale of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.
