Sports Columnist Makes Pitch for Better Santa Fe Ballpark

Santa Fe Fuego LogoOver the weekend, it was revealed that Pecos League commissioner Andrew Dunn’s pecking order of top-notch franchises in his independent circuit had Santa Fe fourth- or fifth-best.  Local sports columnist James Barron thinks Fort Marcy Ballpark, home of the league’s Santa Fe Fuego, has a lot to do with Santa Fe’s ranking.  Read more here.

“Battered Bastards” Worth a Look

rsz_mavs_1If you haven’t already done so, we recommend you check out the Netflix original documentary, The Battered Bastards of Baseball, about the short-lived (1973-1977) independent Single-A Portland Mavericks (Northwest League) launched by former minor-league player and television actor Bing Russell, father of movie star Kurt Russell.  We finally got around to watching it, and it’s definitely worth checking out.  Read more hereRead reviews on Rotten Tomatoes hereGo to the film on Netflix here.

Explorers GM Named American Association’s Executive of the Year

Sioux City Explorers LogoPRESS RELEASE – Sioux City Explorers General Manager, Shane Tritz, has been named the 2013 American Association Executive of the Year, the league office announced today.  The award was decided by a vote of all thirteen teams’ field managers and media representatives and this is the first time in team history that a member of the Sioux City Explorers organization has received the award. Bees Honor Trappers’ 29 in a Row

The Triple-A Salt Lake Bees (Pacific Coast League) honored the 1987 Salt Lake Trappers Thursday night, marking the 25th anniversary of the team’s 29 consecutive games won. The “29 in a Row” by the Trappers remains the longest winning streak in American professional baseball history.
