Rise of the Astrodome, Death to Skeeters

The mosquitoes may be back in the Houston (TX) area in the form of the indy pro Sugar Land Skeeters (Atlantic League), but one reason for the building of the Astrodome, the former home of the Houston Astros, was to beat back the mosquitoes that fans and Colt .45s players had to battle at outdoor Colt Stadium.  Read more here.

…and the Smokin’ Pistol Survives

The Houston Astros announced on Friday that they would not remove the smoking pistol from the original Colt .45s logo that will don the throwback uniforms the team will wear on April 10 and April 20 as part of their 50th anniversary celebration.  Yes — believe it or not, this was really an issue, and Paul Lukas from Uni-Watch.com lamented about it on ESPN Page 2 last month.   Read more here and here.

Astros Ponder Name Change

The new owner of the Houston Astros, Jim Crane, said that he is not only considering a uniform change as the team prepares to move to the American League, but a name change too.   No decision has been made, but the issue will be studied in coordination with marketing consultants.  Crane made reference to the Colt .45s, the team’s name when it was established in 1962.  Read more here.
