Homestead May Demolish ‘Pink Elephant’

Police Department Relocates to ‘Pink Elephant’

Homestead Sports Complex LogoThe spring-training facility built in Homestead (FL) to house the Cleveland Indians before it was decimated by Hurricane Andrew and left abandoned by MLB even after it was rebuilt, is now the home to the Homestead Police Department.  The police are moving out of their old headquarters this week and into a temporary station inside the Homestead Sports Complex.  Read more here.  Read more about the Homestead ballpark here.

City Shuts Off Water, Power to ‘Pink Elephant’

The city of Homestead has turned off the electricity and water service to Homestead Sports Complex, saying La Ley Sports has not paid a utility bill since Sept. 7.  The city says the company owes $143,000 in utility payments, including electricity, water and trash.  La Ley Sports took control of the facility two summers ago and filed a class action lawsuit against the city last May, claiming that Continue reading

Woes Continue for ‘Pink Elephant’

La Lay Sports, which took control of Homestead Sports Complex last summer,  is once again behind on more than $162,000 on utility and insurance bills.  The city is locked in a legal battle with the operator, in part, over the bills.  La Ley filed a class action lawsuit against the city in May, claiming that Homestead overbills its utility customers. “Pink Elephant” Finally Gets Tenant

The Homestead Sports Complex was built in 1991 as the new spring training home for the Cleveland Indians.  A monster hurricane then decimated it before the Indians moved in.  The ballpark was rebuilt in 1993, but the Indians had already gone elsewhere, and no other MLB team came calling.  Now, after 20 years without a real tenant, the city has inked a deal with La Lay Sports.  Read more here.
