The University of Minnesota is scheduled to break ground this afternoon on a new ballpark to replace deteriorating Siebert Field for the Golden Gophers baseball team. Playing baseball in the Big Ten isn’t easy in February and March, which is the reason the winningest coach in Big Ten history, Minnesota Golden Gophers Coach John Anderson, is proposing a summer-only schedule. This would keep the Big Ten out of the NCAA tournament, so the powers are pondering a fall-spring model. Competitiveness with teams in the warmer climates is the major issue here. Read more here.
It’s been a long time coming, but the Universityof Minnesota issued a request for proposal last week soliciting design-build services for the development of a $7.5 million ballpark for the Golden Gophers. Proposals are due by Jan. 27. The facility, which will have artificial turf, is being targeted for completion by the end of this year. The Gophers currently play at 40-year-old Siebert Field. The fundraising for a new on campus ballpark for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball team just got a major injection. The Pohlad family, owners of the Minnesota Twins, announced at a press conference yesterday a $2 million gift to the university for the project.
