For now, the Northwoods League (Summer Collegiate) isn’t coming to Mitchell in 2019. Per a contract agreed to in May 2017, the league pays Mitchell $1,000 annually for each year it does not play in the city. Once the circuit decides to exercise its option to play, the lease goes up to $10,000 per year to play at Drake Field at the Cadwell Sports Complex. Read more here.
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred on Tuesday mentioned mentioned a short list of viable expansion cities, including Portland (OR), Las Vegas (NV), Charlotte (NC) and Nashville (TN) in the U.S., as well as Montreal (QC) and maybe Vancouver (BC) in Canada. The Sugar Land Skeeters may lower their travel expenses in 2018, as the independent professional Atlantic League would like to add three more teams in Texas. While talks are in the infancy stage, the Atlantic League (Indy Pro) is exploring Raleigh (NC) as a home for a future expansion franchise. Read more here. Bryan Wickline was officially tabbed as commissioner of the summer collegiate Prospect League on Oct. 17, replacing former commissioner Dave Chase, whose contract was not renewed after the 2014 season. Expansion (to fill in the gaps) is one of his top priorities for the far-flung circuit that includes teams from Hannibal (MO) to Butler (PA). Read more here.
