An entertainment district right next to TD Ameritrade Park, home of the College World Series, is one step closer from happening. The Omaha (NE) city council approved an agreement with MECA establishing development guidelines, which will regulate just how the city moves ahead with the project at Lot B downtown. Read more here.

After home teams dominated the Super Regionals at a historic rate, the higher-seeded teams went 4-0 to begin the College World Series. Oregon State and LSU each scored comeback wins on Saturday, while Louisville and Florida took down their opponents a little smoother on Sunday. Read more and view bracket here.
For the first time, beer and wine will be sold to fans in TD Ameritrade Park’s main concourse and grandstand sections on the club level during the College World Series. The field for the NCAA baseball tournament has been set, and the Oregon State Beavers have been awarded the No. 1 seed. The tournament starts with regionals on May 30-June 2. Lambert Bartak, the long-time organist at Rosenblatt Stadium, passed away on Sunday. Bartak’s passing at age 94 came three years after he played “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” for College World Series fans for the last time, in the event’s final year at Rosenblatt. Read more and view photos here.
The News & Observer staff columnist Luke DeCock lays blame on TD Ameritrade Park for the lack of home runs in the College World Series tournament. While proclaiming the stadium has damaged the CWS, DeCock admits TD Ameritrade was built with the same dimensions as old Rosenblatt Stadium, and the NCAA tweaked college bats two years ago to mimic their less powerful wooden counterparts. Fed up with fans interrupting College World Series games by running onto the field during play, Roger Dixon, president of the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, issued a stern warning Wednesday to anyone tempted to jump the fence this year that he or she will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. Trespassers could face six months in jail and a $500 fine. Read more here.
The Omaha Zoo on Friday held a ceremony unveiling the new “Johnny Rosenblatt’s Infield at the Zoo,” a memorial paying tribute to the stadium that played host to the College World Series for 60 years and the Triple-A Omaha Royals (Pacific Coast League). Twenty-five pounds of explosives were ignited Wednesday morning to bring down the press box at Rosenblatt Stadium, the former home of the College World Series and Triple-A Omaha Royals. Demolition of the ballpark began last month. Read more and watch explosion here.
The demolition of Rosenblatt Stadium, the former home of the College World Series and Triple-A Omaha Royals, is now underway. The ballpark will face more of a surgical dismantling, rather than a big wrecking ball, because Rosenblatt was built with so much steel. Anderson Excavating has six months to finish the job. PRESS RELEASE – History was made this past weekend as U. S. Steel Yard hosted it’s first-ever NCAA Regional. Host school Purdue University was joined by Kentucky, Kent State and Valparaiso in the double-elimination tournament. Major League Baseball and the NCAA are reportedly in talks about developing a broad partnership aimed at expanding the importance of college baseball. This could include funding scholarships across the sport. Increasing diversity in baseball is also a topic of discussion. Read more here.

Now the operators of TD Ameritrade Park, home of the College World Series in downtown Omaha, and Werner Park, home of the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers (Pacific Coast League) in nearby Sarpy County, must focus on maintaining that momentum going into 2012. According to a recent advisory by the Nebraska state tax commissioner, any property not actually owned by a government entity is subject to property taxes. This presents a serious problem for communities that use nonprofit leasing corporations to issue tax-free bonds to fund capital projects like Omaha’s TD Ameritrade Park and Sarpy County’s Werner Park. The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Florida Gators this evening to win back-to-back College World Series titles. The primary historical significance here from our persepctive? The Gamecocks retired Rosenblatt Stadium last year and christened the new TD Ameritrade Park this year. Now that’s extra icing on the championship cake for the Gamecocks baseball program.
With the opening of fancy new, high-tech TD Ameritrade Park, ESPN has “amped up” its coverege of the college world series, according to coordinating producer T0m McNeeley. An estimated 3,000 people showed up at TD Ameritrade Park Monday evening for Creighton University’s open house, and fans appeared to come away impressed. From what little bit we could see of the stadium bowl in a photo appearing in the Omaha paper this morning, it looks pretty sweet. The College World Series era at Rosenblatt Stadium came to a close last night, as the University of South Carolina Gamecocks finished off the UCLA Bruins to win their first College World Series championship. State Sen. Brad Ashford says it is time for Douglas and Sarpy Counties to get along and start working together. He is proposing a ‘turnback’ tax that would take sales tax revenues generated by retail sales at the ballparks and nearby hotels, and ‘turn back’ those revenues to the host communities to help pay the debt on the facilities. His proposal also creates an incentive for the new facilities to cooperate on marketing and the scheduling of events. Read more here.
