No surprise here, but the Double-A Southern League has reportedly given approval for the Carolina Mudcats to move from Zebulon (NC) to Pensacola (FL). The team has already been renamed the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Read more here. Thanks to John Cerone for the link.
The Single-A Kinston Indians (Carolina League) will play their last home game tonight at Grainger Stadium. The team is relocating to Zebulon (NC) to replace the Double-A Carolina Mudcats (Southern League), which are moving to Pensacola (FL). Focus in town now turns to a replacement franchise. Next monday will be the last opening day in Zebulon (NC) and Five County Stadium for the Double-A Carolina Mudcats. The Southern League team will be relocating to Pensacola (FL) after the 2011 season. PRESS RELEASE – The Pensacola Professional Baseball team has partnered with Pensacola News Journal and Wendy’s for the official name-the-team contest. The Single-A Kinston Indians will be relocating to Zebulon (NC) to replace the Double-A Carolina Mudcats, which will be moving to Pensacola (FL) after the 2011 season. Read more here.
The original design for the new Community Maritime Park in Pensacola (FL) provided for 3,500-seats to accommodate the indy pro Pensacola Pelicans. Now that Pensacola will be getting a Double-A Southern League franchise, ballpark seating capacity will be raised to 6,000, and extra amenities and features will be added, including water fountains and an ornamental lighthouse.
