Swan Song Celebration for Capital City Stadium

In an agreement with developers Weddle Real Estate Investments, the city of Columbia (SC) is requiring the New York company to pony up $60,000 so Historic Columbia can make a documentary about Capital City Stadium and plan a “last tour” event before it is demolished.  Read more and view photo gallery here.

Home Run King Hank Aaron Visits Capital City Stadium

Columbia Blowfish BlueyBaseball legend Hank Aaron, 79, was in Columbia (SC) Wednesday night to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Capitol City Stadium, home of the summer collegiate Columbia Blowfish (Coastal Plain League).  This is likely the final year of baseball at the stadium where Aaron played his last minor league game in 1953.  Read more and view news report hereWatch 13:20 minute interview with Hammerin’ Hank at the park here.

Capital City Stadium’s Last Days

The demolition of Capital City Stadium, home of the summer collegiate Columbia Blowfish (Coastal Plain League), is closer to reality, as city signed off on a 56-page contract last week agreeing to sell the six-acre Capital City Stadium property to a Walmart developer.  Read more here.  For a look back at Capital City Stadium, view gallery here.

Blowfish Exploring Move to Lexington County

Now that the sale of Capital City Stadium to a Walmart developer has been authorized, the summer collegiate Columbia Blowfish (Coastal Plain League) must find a new home.  The team is now in early talks with the mayors of Cayce and Lexington about building a new multi-use facility.  Seeing the writing on the wall, the Blowfish have been looking for a new home since last fall.  Read more here.

Council Approves Sale of Stadium Property for Walmart Development

Columbia City Council Delays Vote on Ballpark Sale

The Columbia (SC) City Council has set aside a vote on the $1 million sale of Capital City Stadium, home of the summer collegiate Columbia Blowfish (Coastal Plain League), because of a watershed issue that will require a one to three month long study to resolve.  The property is being sold to make room for a new Walmart-based development.  Read more here.
