During an unveiling gala at the Osceola Heritage Club, it was announced that the new Single-A Florida State League franchise taking up residence at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee (FL) will be known as Florida Fire Frogs. Six “Name the Team” finalists have been chosen for the relocating Brevard County Manatees (Single-A, Florida State League), which will make Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee (FL) home starting next season. Fans have until 11:59pm EST on Wednesday, August 18th, to select one of the following names: Florida Dragonflies, Florida Fire Frogs, Florida Mud Kickers, Florida Rodeo Clowns, Florida Sorcerers, Florida Toucans. Every team out there seems to be holding Star Wars Night, so it has become a bit of a yawner when it comes to uniqueness, but the Brooklyn Cyclones (Single-A, New-York Penn League) have taken things to a different dimension:
“Imitation lightsabers, cosplay robes, hot dogs, and the chicken dance were all folded into a deeply bizarre spectacle as the Cyclones chose to eschew the original film scripts and instead tell a story that runs afoul of Star Wars canon.” Read more and watch videos here.

Some Brevard County (FL) leaders want to bet big on the future of the area’s Space Coast stadium, as the Washington Nationals and possibly the Brevard County Manatees (Single-A, Florida State League) head for the door. Commissioners want to attract a major youth athletic league to the ballpark. It could cost $10 million to do it. Watch news report here.
Florida Institute of Technology President Anthony Catanese is reportedly “very interested” in teaming up with the Brevard County Manatees (Single-A, Florida State League) in a downtown dual-purpose football-baseball stadium. Read more here.
At their meeting Tuesday night, Melbourne (FL) city council members will hear more about an idea to build a new baseball stadium downtown in order to keep the Brevard County Manatees (Single-A, Florida State League) in the area. The Single-A Brevard County Manatees (Florida State League) are exploring a potential move from Viera into a future downtown Melbourne baseball stadium at the old SunTrust Bank site on New Haven Avenue. The Rollins College board of trustees has decided against moving ahead with a stadium deal at Harper-Shepherd Field, in response to more than 200 emails and letters from residents concerned about noise and traffic. Winter Park (FL) will continue to evaluate a pair of other sites for a possible stadium. Read more here.
Orange County (FL) commissioners were set to vote Tuesday on a key funding mechanism needed to build a new stadium at Rollins College for the Tars and the Single-A Brevard County Manatees (Florida State League), but that vote was put off because of concerns by Rollins’ board of trustees. As the city of Winter Park (FL) awaits approval from Orange County for plans to build a new minor league baseball stadium where Alfond Stadium at Harper-Shepherd Field is now, the city is launching a study of the traffic patterns leading to the site and what parking issues need to be resolved. The City of Winter Park (FL), the Single-A Brevard County Manatees (Florida State League), and Rollins College have reached a tentative deal to bring the minor league baseball team to Winter Park, beginning with the 2016 season.
