Australian Baseball League Expands to New Zealand, Welcomes the ‘Auckland Tuatara’

PRESS RELEASE – The Australian Baseball League’s newest team will be known as the Auckland Tuatara. The New Zealand expansion team announced today it would be called Tuatara and adopt teal and navy blue – which have a strong link to the region’s marine heritage – as its colours.

ABL Looking to Expand to New Zealand, Possible New Ballpark on Deck

Baseball New Zealand is searching for a venue in Auckland where a stadium can be built to house a professional team. Australian Baseball League Championship Series Begins Feb. 7

The Australian Baseball League Championship Series is set, as the Canberra Cavalry downed the Sydney Blue Sox 7-1 Sunday in deciding Game 3 of the Preliminary Series.  The Cavalry will now travel to Perth for the three-game, winner-take-all final against the Heat at Barbagallo Ballpark starting Friday, Feb. 7. Perth Wins Back-to-Back ABL Titles

The Perth Heat repeated as Australian Baseball League champions early this morning (U.S. time), as they defeated the Melbourne Aces 7-6 in 13 innings in deciding Game 3 of the 2012 ABL Championship Series.  We caught the game via web streaming.  Despite the pre-sunrise hour, it was great to get a little baseball fix in February.  There were a few interesting commercials during the broadcast too. Heat Down Bite to Even Championship Series

The inaugural Australian Baseball League‘s Championship Series is all tied up 1-1, as the Perth Heat defeated the Adelaide Bite 9-2 in Game 2 on Saturday at Barbagallo Ballpark in front of 3,074 fans.  If you are up at 2:00 a.m. Eastern Time (3:00 p.m. Perth time) on Sunday morning, and your cable or satellite provider carries Fox Sports 3 or 3 HD, you can watch deciding Game 3 live.  Read more here.

MLB-Backed Australian Baseball League to Begin Play in November

The new Australian Baseball League is ready to begin play in November.  Cities hosting teams include Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.  The ABL is being funded by Major League Baseball (75%) and the Australian Baseball Federation (25%).  Go to website here.
