Start-Up Champions Announce First GM

Ottawa Champions Logo 1PRESS RELEASE – The Ottawa Champions announced the hiring of Ben Hodge as the club’s first general manager on Monday.

Most recently, Hodge spent three years at Simon Fraser University, Canada’s only NCAA institution, as the athletic department’s marketing communications director.

Previously, Hodge spent six seasons with the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors of the Ontario Hockey League while that franchise was owned by Eugene Melnyk and the Ottawa Senators. He sat on the host committee of the 2011 Memorial Cup, while also serving as the team’s public relations manager. Hodge broke in to the professional world of sports with the National Lacrosse League’s Toronto Rock and was an umpire for four seasons in Ontario’s semi-pro Intercounty Baseball League.

“The market for professional sports in Ottawa has grown tremendously in recent years, and we are excited to carve out our own niche by offering fans a first-class experience on and off the field,” Hodge said. “Ownership is committed to the community and committed to doing things right in Ottawa. We’re excited about the high-caliber baseball that fans will experience this season.”

“We are ensuring that a strong front- office operation is securely in place this winter as we prepare to welcome our fans and families to the ballpark from across the National Capital Region in May,” Champions President David Gourlay added. “I am excited to see Ben lead a front office that is committed to not only the Ottawa Champions organization, but ensuring a positive and rewarding fan experience at our games.”

The Champions’ front office staff currently has three full-time members. Hodge joins Director of Sales Davyd Balloch, and Director of Communications and Marketing Andrew Denny.
More appointments will be made over the next several months as the team prepares for its inaugural season.

The Champions will make their debut May 22 at Ottawa Stadium against the Sussex County Miners, their fellow 2015 Can-Am league expansion club.

Tickets are currently on sale, with season tickets just $475 per seat, 20-game flex packs $159 and 10-game flex packs $89. For more information, call the Champions office at 613-745-2255or email tickets@ottawachampions.com.
