PRESS RELEASE – The Rochester Honkers Baseball Club announced today that Erik Ryan Solberg from Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. will be the team’s new radio voice for the 2014 season. All 36 home and 36 away games will be broadcasted live on Sports Radio AM 1520 The Ticket, a Townsquare Media Group station.
“I’m tremendously excited to join the Rochester Honkers organization, and to call Northwoods League Baseball,” said Solberg. “Broadcasting baseball is one of my true passions, so to have the opportunity to do it with one of the preeminent clubs in the Northwoods League is really special.”
Solberg has plenty of experience behind the microphone. He handled the play-by-play for a package of Nicholls women’s basketball and baseball games in 2014. He was under the tutelage of former Honkers broadcaster, Mike Wagenheim, who is the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications at Nicholls. Solberg joined the Colonel Sports Network in August, 2013, serving as a sideline reporter for football while handling camera duties for Colonels All-Access and assisting with production of The Charlie Stubbs Show. A former track student-athlete at Southeastern Louisiana and Ole Miss, Solberg currently doubled as a volunteer assistant with the Nicholls soccer team and served as head coach of the St. Charles Attackers, leading them to the 2014 Louisiana Soccer Association U12 state championship. Prior to Nicholls, Solberg served as a public address announcer for Ole Miss football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and softball and handled duties at the 2011 SEC Softball Championships. Additionally, Solberg hosted College Sports Talk Live with Erik Ryan Solberg on Rebel Radio 92.1, WUMS-FM in Oxford, Miss. and the Erik Solberg Show on Spreaker Radio.
Solberg graduated from Ole Miss in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies. While with the Rebels, Solberg twice earned SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades and was awarded two letters in track and cross country. He also played midfield for the school’s club soccer team, where he helped coordinate, plan and coach practices for the program. Formerly a violinist in the Lafayette-Oxford-University Orchestra, Solberg served on the leadership teams at Ole Miss and SLU for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “I’m looking forward to moving back to the Midwest this summer,” said Solberg. “The fact that Rochester is close to friends and family makes this opportunity that much more meaningful to me personally.”
Solberg takes over the mic from Michael Broskowski who is now the Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the Burlington Bees. The Rochester Honkers 21st season begins on May 27th when the Waterloo Bucks prance into Mayo Field for a 7:05pm first pitch. The Honkers will play 72 games in 2014 (36 home, 36 away).
