PRESS RELEASE – With the historic first month of the season in the books, the Charlotte Knights are set to kick-off the month of May with a return home to BB&T Ballpark on Monday, May 5 to open an eight-game homestand. Monday’s series opener against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies) features an appearance by WWE Hall-of-Famer Tito Santana, a Cinco De Mayo celebration, and delicious $1 hot dogs, presented by Sahlen’s.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the Knights and IronPigs will battle in a 7:05 p.m. game — the team’s 12th game at BB&T Ballpark this season. Through the first 11 home games, the Knights welcomed 106,058 fans through the gates of their new kingdom — the most in all of Minor League Baseball this season.
Monday, May 5 is Cinco De Mayo and the Knights are excited to welcome wrestling legend and WWE Hall-of-Famer Tito Santana to the Queen City for a special meet and greet. Santana will take photos with fans and sign autographs.
Over his WWE career, which spanned from 1979 to 1993, Santana held the WWE Intercontinental Championship Title twice and the WWE Tag Team Championship twice. Santana holds the distinction of wrestling in the very first match at the original WrestleMania in 1985. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004.
While Santana still wrestles on occasion, the 60-year-old is currently a middle school teacher in New Jersey. CBS News published a story in 2013 about how Santana went from being a professional wrestling icon to a middle school teacher. You can view that story here: http://bit.ly/OHxOB2.
