The summer collegiate Okotoks Dawgs (Western Major Baseball League) are averaging 2,334 fans per game this season ahead of last years high-water mark of 2,202. Beyond the success at the gate, Okotoks (AB) was recently awarded the 2016 World Children’s Baseball Fair, and John Ircandia, managing director of the Dawgs, was named Honorary Chairman of the WCBF.
The Dawgs are also hosting Toronto Blue Jays alumni Jesse Barfield, Duane Ward, Lloyd Moseby, Otto Velez, Cecil Fielder and Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar for the Toronto Blue Jays Honda Super Camps at Seaman Stadium July 29th to August 2nd. The five-day event includes the Roberto Alomar & Friends Charity Home Run Derby on August 1st. This marks the first major partnership between Dawgs and Canada’s MLB team, with all funds going to the charitable Blue Jays Foundation.
They’re a great success story. I wonder if Calgary will ever get a pro team again?
