Poll: Keep Rays at Tropicana Field

Tampa Bay Rays LogoThis is a little silly, but a recent Tampa Bay Times, Bay News 9, and AM 820 News Tampa Bay telephone survey of 521 Pinellas County and Hillsborough County (FL) residents showed that the most popular stadium option for the Tampa Bay Rays is to keep the team playing at Tropicana Field.  Of course, we all know this is completely unrelated to any love for The Trop.  Read more here.

Agree with Kurt. What has happened in Miami should scare anyone considering a new Rays ballpark. The Trop is the best but it is unique and the Rays seem to always (lately) have a group of exciting young’s players. Do they still light up the top orange when the team wins?

  2. It’s not surprising. The locals are seeing how the taxpayers in Miami put up a big chunk of the bill for the new ballpark there, and probably think Tropicana Field is perfectly adequate as a venue when considering the alternative. It’s just my opinion, but I don’t think the Trop is that bad at all. From what I’ve read, the attendance issues are due more to the distance from Tampa and the traffic.

    • The ballpark does need replacing. There’s so much in a new ballpark that the Trop doesn’t have, and the fans deserve it. The problem, as I see it, is the same problem the Florida State League has. Most Florida baseball fans follow teams other than the Rays, mostly due to spring training. The Yankees and the Phillies sell out their spring training games, and the Blue Jays, Pirates and Orioles have strong followings in the Tampa Bay area. Not many people follow the Rays, nor is there any incentive for them to do it.

      • What the Rays are doing is pretty smart though…they’re gearing a lot of things in the Trop for kids, and they let you park for free if you have four or more in the car. So it’s great for families. With a good team on the field they could be building a strong fan base for the next generation. I don’t argue that there’s things about the Trop that put the Rays at a disadvantage and that maybe their fans do deserve a better ballpark, but I don’t have a problem with the mayor of St. Pete holding the Rays to a contract that they willingly signed.
