PRESS RELEASE – New England Collegiate Baseball League Commissioner Sean McGrath today announced the election of three new members to the NECBL Board of Directors. The Board elected Gregg Hunt and Brian Hamm as Deputy Commissioners, and elected Max Pinto as the League’s new Secretary. All three men have strong ties to the NECBL.
Hunt, a resident of northwest Connecticut, was the head coach of the Torrington Twisters (now New Bedford Bay Sox) from 1997 to 2008. The following year, Hunt coached the Manchester Silkworms in their final season before their move to become the Laconia Muskrats. The University of Connecticut graduate led Torrington to the NECBL’s best regular season record in 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2003; he also coached Washington National ace Stephen Strasburg during the summer of 2007.
Hamm has been the head baseball coach at Amherst since the 2009 season; he won the 2011 NESCAC’s Coach of the Year and helped outfielder and NECBL alum Kevin Heller get selected by the Red Sox in the 2012 MLB Draft. Hamm graduated from Middlebury in 2002 and earned his Masters at UMass five years later. During the summer of 2007, Hamm, who spent three years as an envoy coach for several European national teams, worked as an assistant coach for the North Adams SteepleCats.
One of the best players on the ’07 SteepleCats was outfielder and West Coast native Pinto. The Williams College alumnus led the team in hitting (.342) and slugging percentage (.509). Pinto, also a standout wrestler for the Ephmen, was named to the Hall of Fame Network’s nationwide list of “The 15 best student/athletes you’ve probably never heard of.” After working for three years at the Parthenon Group strategic advisory firm, Pinto is a candidate a Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, where he is scheduled to get his MBA in the spring of 2013.
