PRESS RELEASE – The Inland Empire 66ers proclaimed today that Friday, April 5, 2013 will be Farewell to Twinkies Night on the heels of the announcement that Hostess looks to be shutting down their operations, which would mean the end of one of America’s most beloved snacks. Fans of the 66ers will have the opportunity to enjoy one last Twinkie on Farewell to Twinkies Night.
The organization has also extended an offer to actor Woody Harrelson, who in 2009, starred as the Twinkie obsessed Tallahassee in the zombie comedy, Zombieland, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Beyond the invitation to Harrelson, the 66ers have also contacted Hostess about featuring Twinkie the Kid, Hostess’s well known mascot, in the Mascot Dash vs. the team’s own Bernie.
The first 999 fans in attendance will receive a free Twinkie; however there will be a silent auction for the final Twinkie to be awarded during the seventh inning stretch with proceeds going to charity. 66ers GM, Joe Hudson stated, “These 999 Twinkies could very well be the last produced and to be able to share them with our fans, would be a real treat. We hope Mr. Harrelson and Twinkie the Kid are able to join us in celebration of this amazing snack that has brought joy and happiness to people all over the world since 1930.”
Twinkies were invented in Schiller Park, Illinois in 1930 by James Alexander Dewar. On November 16, 2012, Hostess announced that they were ceasing production. The Inland Empire 66ers hope fans of the team and fans of Twinkies alike, will be a part of all the Twinkie related festivities on April 5, 2013 at San Manuel Stadium.
