PRESS RELEASE – The Wilmington Blue Rocks are proud to announce they have named Matt Janus as the team’s new director of broadcasting and media relations. He will call all 140 games on the Blue Rocks Radio Network 89.7 WGLS-FM in 2013.
Janus began working for the Blue Rocks as a 15-year-old sophomore in high school when he sold yearbooks and scorecards. He moved to the marketing department during college, and then joined the media relations staff as the team’s assistant director of broadcasting and media relations in 2009. After three years as the organization’s No. 2 broadcaster, Janus was promoted to new media manager before the 2012 season, at which time he served as co-host of the team’s between-inning on-field contests, and designed and implemented the franchise’s social media strategy.
The 28-year-old Middletown, Delaware native is a familiar voice in the First State. On top of his three-year stint on the Blue Rocks Radio Network, Janus also broadcasts games for his alma mater, the University of Delaware.
He serves as the sideline reporter on Blue Hen football radio broadcasts, does play-by-play and color commentary for the nationally-ranked Delaware women’s basketball team, and provides color commentary for select men’s basketball games.
Janus also serves as the lead play-by-play voice for the Delaware High School Football Game of the Week on Sports Radio 1290 The Ticket, and has provided play-by-play during television broadcasts of college football and basketball the last three years on the Sports Fever TV Network.
Janus is replacing John Sadak, who was named the director of broadcasting and media relations for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Monday. In seven years as the “voice of the Rocks,” Sadak’s work was recognized by the Delaware Press Association, Philadelphia Press Association, New Jersey Associated Press Broadcasters’ Association, and the Society of Professional Journalists.
“John Sadak leaves huge shoes to fill,” Janus said. “He has been an incredible mentor for me, and an even better friend for more than a half-decade. I am incredibly happy that he has an opportunity to call Triple-A games, and am honored to follow in his footsteps with an organization that means so much to me.”
Blue Rocks general manager Chris Kemple said he was very pleased to replace a departing talented broadcaster with another skilled announcer.
“We are very happy to have Matt Janus as our new radio voice,” Kemple said. “He has done a great job for us in the past, and we are looking forward to him carrying on the strong tradition we have built of talented lead-broadcasters.”
