PRESS RELEASE – On the 65th anniversary of his groundbreaking integration into the American League, Indians Hall of Famer Larry Doby will be remembered with a street commemoration and on-field ceremony on July 6.
The ceremony will take place immediately following the game against the Tampa Bay Rays and will include a video remembrance of Larry Doby and his incredible contributions to not only the Indians but all of Major League Baseball, and an unveiling of the commemorative “Larry Doby Way” street sign and USPS stamp. Special guests Larry Doby, Jr., Larry Doby’s daughters Christina Fearrington and Nicole Frasier, former teammate Jim “Mudcat” Grant, and Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman will be on hand.
The City of Cleveland will commemorate Eagle Avenue between Ontario and E 9th as Larry Doby Way. New street signs will be installed on the corner of Ontario and Eagle, at E 6th Street and Eagle just outside Progressive Field Gate B, and at E 9th Street and Eagle on Friday, July 6.
The United States Postal Service will dedicate a stamp to Larry Doby on July 21 at 10:00am during the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel, 24 Public Square, Cleveland, OH 44012. The ceremony is free and open to the general public. The Doby Stamp is part of a USPS collection of MLB All-Stars stamps and will be available in limited quantities in the Cleveland market starting July 21. Larry Doby, Jr. and Jim “Mudcat” Grant will also participate in a number of activities at the ballpark on Friday. They will both throw out ceremonial first pitches and Grant will meet and greet fans and sign autographs at Rally Alley at 6:00 pm. In addition, they will both attend an Indians front office diversity breakfast celebrating the Indians’ Diversity Mission, In the Spirit of Larry Doby.
Mudcat Grant, Larry Doby, Jr. and Larry Doby’s two daughters will be at the Baseball Heritage Museum on Friday, July 6 from 11:30am to 1:30pm as part of a “65th Anniversary Salute to Larry Doby.” Baseball historian Issac Brooks will deliver a retrospective on the life of Larry Doby, followed by a Q&A session with Grant and Doby, Jr. The event is open to the public and free of charge. The Baseball Heritage Museum is located inside the Colonial Arcade, 530 Euclid Avenue, in downtown Cleveland.
