PRESS RELEASE – The Sioux City Explorers announced today that veteran play-by-play broadcaster, Dave Nitz will return as the ‘Voice of the X’s’ and for the 20th consecutive season, all 100 Sioux City Explorers home and away games will be heard on 1360 KSCJ and via the X’s website (www.xsbaseball.com).
The 2012 season will mark Nitz’s 31st year in minor league baseball broadcasting, his fourth as the ‘Voice of the X’s. A radio broadcast veteran, Nitz has been calling collegiate and professional athletic events for over 50 years.
“I guess I have become the Brett Favre of minor league baseball. After announcing my retirement at the end of last season, I realized in January, I had made my announcement too quick,” joked Nitz on his return. “I appreciate the Explorers welcoming me back for the upcoming season. If I had not been treated so well by the entire Explorers organization from the front office, the players and coaches and most importantly the fans of the Siouxland area and the management of KSCJ, my return would not have been possible. I want to thank everyone for their support of the broadcasts and look forward to another exciting year of X’s baseball on KSCJ.”
In his 31 years of minor league baseball broadcasting, Nitz’s has called the games for the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A farm team in Oklahoma City, the former San Francisco Giants’ Double-A team in Shreveport, LA and the Baltimore Orioles’ Single-A team in Bluefield, WV. In addition to his affiliated experience, Nitz has been with independent league teams in Baton Rouge and Shreveport, LA. Throughout his career, he has broadcasted over 3,500 minor league baseball games.
On behalf of our entire organization, it is an honor to have Dave return for a fourth season as the voice of the X’s,” commented General Manager, Shane Tritz on Nitz’s return. “Dave is a true professional and I am confident our fans will once again be treated to a first class broadcast during our 20th anniversary season with Dave calling the action on 1360 KSCJ.”
Along with minor league baseball, Dave has completed his 37th year as the radio voice of Louisiana Teach football, basketball and baseball. In December of 2009, he broadcasted his 2,000th Louisiana Tech game. Recent accolades Nitz has received were Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and his induction in the Louisiana Tech Athletic Hall of Fame, which also includes Terry Bradshaw and Karl Malone.
“KSCJ is pleased to help the Explorers celebrate 20 years in Siouxland on the playing field and on the KSCJ airwaves,” comments Powell Broadcasting General Manager, Dennis Bullock. “We are also excited that veteran announcer Dave Nitz will once again bring X’s baseball to the great fans of Siouxland.”
