Colts Hire Whitten as Assistant GM

PRESS RELEASE – The San Angelo Colts have named Murlin Whitten as their Assistant General Manager for the 2012 season. Whitten is a native Texan who has 18 years of experience in minor league baseball. He also worked multiple spring trainings for the San Francisco Giants, California Angels, Oakland Athletics and Colorado Rockies.

“Murlin has a great deal of experience in the baseball industry, and he will be a valuable addition to our front office,” Colts General Manager Mike Babcock said.

Whitten began his career in baseball in 1987 as a Beer and Food Vendor for the Class AA Midland Angels of the Texas League. Whitten became Midland’s Clubhouse Manager in 1988. From 1988 through 2000, Whitten served as the Clubhouse Manager for four minor league organizations.

Whitten spent one year as the Clubhouse Manager for the Class AA Huntsville Stars of the Southern League before returning to Midland in 1990.

The following year Whitten became the Clubhouse Manager for the Texas League’s San Antonio Missions. He worked for the Missions for two years. Then in 1993, Whitten left his home state to become the Clubhouse Manager for the Class AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the Pacific Coast League.

Whitten was the Sky Sox clubby for seven years before becoming their Assistant General Manager in 2001. He held that post for four years, and then left baseball to pursue other ventures.

After the 2004 season, Whitten took a job as a government contractor in Kuwait. There he worked Morale, Welfare and Recreation at Camp Buehring. Following a stint overseas, Whitten returned to the United States and became a craps dealer at a casino in Cripple Creek, Colo. He worked at the casino until coming to San Angelo this month.

“I am very excited to be back in my home state, and working in baseball again,” Whitten said. “I am looking forward to meeting Colts fans throughout San Angelo, and ensuring that everyone enjoys their time at Foster Field this summer.”

Away from the ballpark, Whitten enjoys reading, collecting comic books, singing karaoke and watching all kinds of sports.

The San Angelo Colts are a member of United League Baseball who will play their 13th season in 2012. Season ticket plans are on sale now, and available at the Colts front office at Foster Field.

Not sure if it means anything, but the release lists the Colts as a member of United League Baseball. It wouldn’t surprise us to see the North American League’s Texas teams revert back to the ULB, in light of the near collapse of the NAL out west.
