Next Tuesday will mark the 40th anniversary of baseball’s loss of “The Alamo” (not the one in San Antonio) to an early morning fire. Meadowbrook Park, built in 1938, was gutted by flames on Valentine’s Day in 1972, just before young Rich Donnelly rolled into Greenville (SC) to manage the the Single-A Greenville Rangers (Western Carolinas League). Read more here. Soon after the fire, the Greenville City Council provided $8,393.06 in funding to help pay for plumbing and electrical work to make the park usable for the season. Photos of the stadium appear to be scarce, but here is one of Shoeless Joe Jackson sitting at Meadowbrook Park in 1949.
