Lackawanna Gets Extension, Commissioner Wants Guarantee from NY Yankees

The State of Pennsylvania has given Lackawanna County a one-year extension to raise the matching funds necessary to receive a $20 million state grant to build a new ballpark for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (International League).  In related news, outgoing Lackawanna County Commissioner Mike Washo would like to see the New York Yankees guarantee annual lease payments at the ballpark and assume responsibility for capital improvements.  The New York Yankees and Mandalay Baseball Properties are partners in a pending deal to buy the Triple-A club.  Read more here.

    At this point nothing has been done regarding construction-not even any demolition. One would think that Commissioner Washo by now would know what the lease payments and the rest of the deal is going to look like. Until the team is sold to Mandalay nothing can happen because that money is the County’s match to get the state money. Plus don’t forget Luzerne County is claiming they get part of the proceeds from the sale further complicating things (which legally they are entitled to due to an agreement signed in 1986).

  2. Anyone know what the ramifications are here ? Does this mean that the ballpark renovation is off until the funds come through ? Will they be cutting it close for a 2013 opening ? It would be a shame to see the SWB Yankees on the road all season if they could have been playing in Scranton afterall …
