Midwest Collegiate League Expands to Kankakee (IL)

PRESS RELEASE – Summer Collegiate Baseball is coming to Kankakee beginning in the summer of 2012. Summer College Baseball has become an increasingly popular summer attraction over the past decade with more than 150 teams participating in various leagues across the country.

Summer College players utilize wooden bats during the summer as they enhance their skills in preparation for being drafted into Major League Baseball organizations. Many of Major League Baseball’s brightest stars have participated in summer collegiate baseball in the past including New York Yankees star Curtis Granderson, Ben Zobrist of the Tampa Bay Rays, Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals, and Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers.

Kankakee Summer Collegiate Baseball will play as members of the Midwest Collegiate League, a nationally known summer college league based in the Chicagoland area. The Midwest Collegiate League currently has four active clubs including the Chicago Zephyrs, Rockford Foresters, Southland Vikings, and Will County CrackerJacks. The league anticipates announcing an additional expansion club for the 2012 season.

“The Kankakee, Illinois market offers the Midwest Collegiate League an ideal location which is easily accessible from the I-57 Interstate Highway.  It fits perfectly with our expansion plans across the expansive expressway system throughout the Midwest which will also allow for shorter travel times between games, pleasing fans, players, and scouts alike,” said Midwest Collegiate League Commissioner Don Popravak

The new Kankakee Summer Collegiate Baseball club needs a team moniker and is asking the community to submit their ideas for a potential name via email to namekankakeesteam@gmail.com   The team will take suggestions on potential names for the club through the end of July before announcing the team name and logo in early September.
