PRESS RELEASE – Major Richard “Dick” Winters was the third commanding officer (CO) of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. While initially serving as a platoon leader of Easy as a 2nd Lieutenant, he gained the mutual respect and the trust of the men who would later be part of one of the largest invasions known to mankind. Major Winters’ heroism & leadership were captured in the award-winning Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks HBO mini-series Band of Brothers. The title was fitting to the group of men Winters served alongside, the men of “Easy Company”.
On June 6th, 2011, the 67th Anniversary of D-Day, we are having a special tribute to Major Winters and The Men of Easy Company at Clipper Magazine Stadium. It is a collective effort between the Barnstormers, Tim Gray Media, and Jordan Brown with HangTough6644.org to not only provide Winters and Easy Company the tribute they deserve, but to raise funds for the Richard Winters Leadership Project. This initiative is focused on a monument of Major Winters in Normandy, France and a documentary focusing on his leadership skills. Funds needed for the project are in the range of $400,000.
This event will be like no other featuring a memorable pre-game tribute, surviving veterans of original Easy Company, Actors from Band of Brothers, restored WWII vehicles, re-enactors and singers, one of a kind collector’s items, custom 101st Airborne jerseys worn by Barnstormers players and coaches to be auctioned off, and much more!
