PRESS RELEASE – The Flying Squirrels continue their week-long unveiling of the team’s 2011 promotional calendar with the announcement of 12 games featuring either a national entertainment act or celebrity guest. Highlighting those nights are the three-part Legends of Wrestling Series and the newly-minted Retro-Celebrity Series.

The Legends of Wrestling Series will include visits to The Diamond by George “The Animal” Steele, Mick Foley and “The Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase. George “The Animal” Steele will be on hand to kick off the series on Monday, April 11th. The iconic Foley will visit Richmond on Saturday, May 14th, and “The Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase will join the Flying Squirrels on Friday, August 5th.

New for 2011, the Flying Squirrels will bring fans the Retro-Celebrity Series featuring three pop-culture stars of television past. Anson “Potsie” Williams of Happy Days fame will get the series started on Tuesday, April 26th, while Erik “Ponch” Estrada from the show CHiPS will help the Flying Squirrels celebrate Viente Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday, May 25th. On Wednesday, June 15th, Mr. Belding from the cult-hit Saved by the Bell will close out the series on Teacher Appreciation Night.

In addition to the retro-celebrities, the Flying Squirrels will welcome the stars of the current television hit The Deadliest Catch, Cornelia Marie Crew to The Diamond on Friday, June 24th.

“We received a great reaction to Legends of Wrestling Night last season, and we definitely wanted to build upon that for 2011,” said Flying Squirrels’ Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “We’re also going to have a great time with the Retro-Celebrity Series, and it wouldn’t be the Squirrels without some of the top entertainment acts in the country.”

Those entertainment acts will include Little Elvis, who will entertain fans on Friday, May 6th. The Amazing Christopher will follow right on his heels, bringing his one-of-a-kind act to The Diamond on Saturday, May 7th. For the first time at the ballpark, Cowboy Monkey will ride into Richmond on Saturday, July 9th, and the easily recognizable Phillie Phanatic will return to The Diamond on Tuesday, August 2nd.

Punctuating the Flying Squirrels lineup of celebrities is former Washington Redskins’ great Brian Mitchell, who will get fans ready for football season on Saturday, August 6th.
