Indy to Commemorate 125 Seasons, Introduce Logo

PRESS RELEASE – The Indianapolis Indians today – 125 days prior to the start of the 2011 season – have announced that they will celebrate the city’s 125th season of professional baseball in 2011. As part of the announcement the club has unveiled the logo they will use to commemorate the sesquicentennial.

During the upcoming season, the team will showcase the commemorative logo on their on-field uniforms as well as the outfield wall at Victory Field. Other special activities to mark the historic season will be announced at a later date.

Professional baseball has been played in Indianapolis since 1887 when the National League’s St. Louis Maroons relocated and became the Indianapolis Hoosiers. The current Indianapolis Indians franchise was established in 1902 and is regarded as Indy’s first professional sports team.

The roots of professional baseball in Indianapolis have branched out to produce an impressive list of notable teams and players. The Indians have produced 23 championship teams and twelve Hall of Famers, including Al Lopez and Harmon Killebrew. Ten Indiana natives are in the Baseball Hall of Fame, including Billy Herman, grandfather of Indiana’s First Lady Cheri Daniels. Most recently, Indianapolis native Tommy Hunter pitched in the 2010 World Series for the Texas Rangers.

Indianapolis will face division rival Columbus in its 2011 home opener on Thursday, April 7 at 7:05 p.m. Season tickets packages are on sale now by calling the Victory Field Box at 317-269-3545 or clicking Tribe Tickets.
