PRESS RELEASE – The Bakersfield Blaze today announced it has entered into a two year Player Development Contract with the 2010 National League Central Champion Cincinnati Reds. The agreement begins immediately and will conclude at the end of the 2012 baseball season. “The Reds look forward to returning to the Cal League and beginning a relationship with Bakersfield”, said Terry Reynolds, Senior Director of Player Development and Global Scouting. “Player Development is a key component for the Reds and we will do our best to give the fans of Bakersfield a team to be proud of”.
Known as baseball’s first professional team, the Cincinnati Reds boast 5 World Championships, 9 NL Pennants, 7 NL West Division titles, and 2 NL Central Division titles including the 2010 season. Most remembered for the “Big Red Machine” of the 70’s that produced world championships in 1975 and 1976 and the 1990 World Series sweep of the Oakland A’s the Reds have produced some of baseball’s best players and moments. The Reds have also shown they are very committed to developing their farm system. Twelve players from the 2010 NL Central Championship team at one time played for the Reds’ Single-A team in Dayton, Ohio. “We are very excited to enter into an agreement with the Reds”, said Blaze owner D.G Elmore. “We are confident they will be a productive partner on and off the field and we look forward to this new chapter of Bakersfield Blaze baseball”.
Additionally, D.G. Elmore also announced today the hiring of new General Manager Elizabeth Martin replacing former G.M Justin Kozubal who will continue to work for Elmore. Martin has spent the last four years serving as the Assistant General Manager and Legal Counsel for the Visalia Rawhide, the California League Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Martin’s sports marketing tenure also included positions with the Oakland Raiders, and the office of Minor League Baseball. “Elizabeth brings a wealth of sales and management experience to the Blaze”, said Elmore. “Our fans and sponsors are going to love working with her and will enjoy the creative energy she brings to the ballpark”.
The 2011 season kicks off at Historic Sam Lynn Ballpark Thursday April 14th against the Inland Empire 66ers.
The Bakersfield Blaze is a charter member of the California League, and the Class-A Affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
