We would love to review all the documents in the legal battle between Lackawanna County and Luzerne County over the rights to profits from the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. The fight is getting uglier, as commissioners on both sides are lashing out. Our guess is that we won’t see any economic development cooperation between these two counties again in a very long time.
We found it quite interesting that Lackawanna County Commissioner A.J. Munchak has argued that the option agreement to sell the team to Mandalay provides that revenues must go to pay the debt ($14 million, apparently) owed by the Lackawanna County Multi-Purpose Stadium Authority. As we understood it, the dollars from the sale of the team were going to be used as a local match to secure the $20 million grant offered by Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell for a new ballpark.
