Luzerne County has filed a lawsuit against Lackawanna County and the Lackawanna County Multi-Purpose Stadium Authority claiming entitlement to half the “gross proceeds” from any sale of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. This could throw a wrench into a potential $20 million grant from the state that requires local matching funds that would come from the sale of the team. Mandalay Baseball Properties, which operates the team, has an option to buy the franchise for $13 million, so half of that amount is at risk if Luzerne were to prevail.
Back in 1986, Luzerne and Lackawanna ponied up $1 million each to purchase the Triple-A club and bring it to the area. Lackawanna has reportedly spent $14 million on the team over the years and argues that Luzerne is only entitled to “net proceeds.” Read more here.
