The AAGPBL was formed in 1943 by chewing gum mogul and Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley with four teams. The league grew over the years and was at its most popular in 1948 when it drew 910,000 fans. One of the reasons the league drew so many fans was the high quality of play. Players were scouted from semi-pro softball teams across the U.S. and Canada, and tryouts were held in more than a dozen major cities. The league folded after the 1954 season, after twelve seasons featured more than 600 women as professional baseball players.
