City of San Jose Honors Giants with Commendation

PRESS RELEASE – The San Jose Giants were honored with a Commendation by the City of San Jose in a ceremony at the City Council meeting Tuesday. The Giants were recognized for winning the California League Championship, setting their all-time attendance record for the fourth consecutive year, helping raise over $300,000 to youth sports organizations through the Park Packer program, promoting education among our youth and hosting free community events including Comcast movie nights and Gigante’s Halloween Party. The San Jose Giants front office staff and mascot Gigante joined the Mayor and the entire City Council for the ceremony.

“The San Jose Giants provide our residents with a safe and affordable way to enjoy America’s favorite pastime and we recognize and commend them for winning the 2009 California League championship,” said Councilmember Madison Nguyen. “Aside from their excellent performance on the field, the San Jose Giants are also superior off the field as they have a long track record for raising much-needed funds that support youth sports organizations, schools and other non-profits in our community.”

San Jose won the 2009 California League title last September after defeating the High Desert Mavericks in the Championship Series. The Giants won a team-record 93 regular season games before claiming their third championship in the last five years. San Jose also set an attendance record last season with over 223,000 fans enjoying games at Municipal Stadium.

“Without the leadership of Councilmember Nguyen, Mayor Reed and the entire Council, it would have been impossible for us to achieve what we did last year,” said Jim Weyermann San Jose Giants President and CEO. “We have tremendous respect for this administration for helping us figure out how to take a stadium that is 66 years old and continue to keep it running for the entire community to enjoy.”

The San Jose Giants open their defense of the California League title on Thursday, April 8th at Modesto. The home opener at Municipal Stadium is scheduled for Monday, April 12th against the Visalia Rawhide. The Opening Night Extravaganza will include a post-game fireworks display, the championship ring ceremony, 2010 magnet schedule giveaway, the return of Gigante and much more.
