City Seeking Relief from Mustangs’ Burden

mustangslogoThe City of Martinsville, VA, which operates the Martinsville Mustangs from the summer collegiate Coastal Plain League, is exploring ways to reduce or eliminate its annual subsidy for the team, including creating a public-private partnership.  In 2009, the $159,487 in revenues and $216,375 in expenditures resulted in a shortfall of $56,888.  This is comparable to team’s $59,855 shortfall in 2008.

Indeed, finding a private owner to run the team like a business would be a wise move.  With a per game average attendance of 983 fans during the 2009 season, there is reason to believe that this team should be operating in the black, or pretty close to it.  Read more here.
