Opening of SIU’s New Ballpark Delayed

Because of construction challenges caused by a tough winter, the grand opening of Richard “Itchy” Jones Stadium, the new home of the Southern Illinois University Salukis, has been delayed from this weekend until March 14.  SIU’s series against Northern Illinois scheduled for this weekend has been moved to Rent One Park in Marion, home of the indy pro Southern Illinois Miners (Frontier League).  Read more here.  Watch video here.

SIU Breaks Ground on Baseball Stadium Renovations

PRESS RELEASE – Southern Illinois Athletics officially broke ground on a $4 million renovation of Abe Martin Field with a ceremony at the 49-year-old baseball stadium Tuesday afternoon. Speaking at the event were SIU Chancellor Dr. Rita Cheng, Director of Athletics Mario Moccia, Head Coach Ken Henderson and Saluki infielder/outfielder Donny Duschinsky.

$4.9M Renovation Proposed for SIU Ballpark

Athletic officials at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale have presented a 4.9 million renovation plan for Abe Martin Field (“The Abe”).  The plan includes a new 2,000-seat grandstand, lights, and a synthetic field.  Funds for the project musts still be raised.  Read more here.  Thanks to John Cerone for the story.
