PRESS RELEASE – The North County Cannons, a new minor league baseball team, will not be playing this summer. Team owner and president, Jim Hoynes, confirmed that stadium use negotiations with Cal State San Marcos were concluded without success and every effort to locate an alternate playing location has turned up negative.
Hoynes decided to sever ties with the American West Baseball League due to unspecified reasons, but wishes the league well in their future endeavors. This marks the departure of four of the original five AWBL franchises including Long Beach, Mesa, and Yuma. The only remaining franchise being Fullerton with recent additions of Nogales, AZ and possibly Las Cruces, NM.
Mr. Hoynes expressed his sincere gratitude to the North County fans, communities, corporate partners and sponsors for their overwhelming support and enthusiasm. He stated that “my goal continues to bring safe, affordable, fun, family entertainment in the form of minor league baseball to the residents of North San Diego County.”

The owners seem to know what they are doing, and have the will to do it, but the league just doesn’t at all. I guess the Pacific Association did end up winning out in the battle for California.
Why doesn’t this surprise me?
