Worcester Phoenix to Rise?

We can’t say we’re crazy about the name, but Bob Weldon from Black Ink Sports has approached the indy pro Can-Am League and other stakeholders about securing the rights to the Worcester (MA) market and Hanover Insurance Park after the league shuttered the Worcester Tornadoes amid financial troubles.  He would call the team the Worcester Phoenix.

To make the deal happen, Weldon would seek local partners/investors in a broad and tiered ownership structure.  He said the ownership group would cover the bills owed by the Tornadoes in order to build trust with local businesses.

Interestingly, Weldon’s company helped establish the business operations for the Tornadoes in 2005 and 2006.  Besides Weldon, there are other unnamed parties interested in fielding a team in Worcester too, so don’t go looking for that Phoenix gear just yet.   Read more here and here.  Thanks to John Cerone for the news.

Worcester Phoenix? That makes about as much sense as the Worcester Tornadoes (until a tornado actually his Mass and left its trail along side I84/MASS PIKE a couple years back). But horrible name….
