New Field Unveiled at Pfitzner Stadium

PRESS RELEASE – On Tuesday morning, February 21, the Potomac Nationals peeled back a protective field blanket and unveiled a spectacularly green playing surface. With Opening Day just around the corner, this new state-of-the-art field has transformed Pfitzner Stadium and elevated its surface to the highest level.

Over the course of the offseason, the diamond at the Pfitz underwent a total transformation. Immediately following the last out of the 2011 season, the old surface was completely removed. Carolina Green, an industry leader in field construction, began the process of constructing the new surface. The first step in the process was the installation of brand new Cambridge drainage and irrigation systems. Next, the entire diamond was laser graded to Major League Baseball standards.

The field itself was then constructed; Patriot Bermuda sod was laid and overseeded and then placed underneath the field blanket. This multi-pronged approach ensured the vibrant green growth that can be seen today in Woodbridge. Finally, a new pitchers mound and home plate area have been constructed from Pro’s Choice mound clay.

Art Silber, Potomac Nationals owner was delighted with the results. “The field had not been rebuilt since ball park construction in 1984 and initially when built was not in compliance with major league requirements. What we now have is state of the art which will provide a superior playing surface, but more importantly one that will minimize player injury.”

In order to guarantee this field will thrive for years to come and offer players a world-class surface, the Nationals have hired a full-time groundskeeper. Brian Stokes, who most recently worked with the Washington Nationals’ grounds crew, brings a wealth of experience to Pfitzner Stadium. A graduate of Virginia Tech University and native of the D.C. area, Stokes also spent time working with the Bowie Baysox.

“We are pleased to have Brian join our organization and take over the field duties at the Pfitz. Brian is a high quality individual with a great work ethic and knowledge of the sports turf industry. We are looking forward to the reaction from our fans on Opening Day as we celebrate our new surface and kick off of our 35th Anniversary season.”

The Nationals begin their 2012 season on Friday, April 13 at Pfitzner Stadium. Season ticket plans are on sale now! Call the ticket office at 703-590-2311 to secure your seats for Opening Day and beyond.
