The United League’s Edinburg Roadrunners have been put on notice by the Edinburg (TX) City Commission to pay unpaid back rent for the team’s use of Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Roadrunners have indicated that they will make payment within 30 days. Read more here.
As you might recall, the city terminated the lease of the Central Baseball League’s Roadrunners in 2005 for failure to pay rent pursuant to their lease agreement. As we recall, rent at the time was $50,000 per year, which was a bargain for a brand new park with luxury suites and all the modern fan amenities.
Smelling an opportunity, the United League slipped in and secured a lease for the Edinburg Coyotes. As we recall, the rent was doubled at the time. Later, when John Bryant and Byron Pierce of Texas-Louisiana League fame took full control of the United League out of bankrupcty from the Wendt brothers, the Roadrunners’ branding was revived.
